A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact on the data center and on server computing in general. This is a new category of computing platform that is available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research Industry Report). According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver appliances for deployin... (more)

MasterCard is Turning its Big Data Into Big Money

MasterCard, the world’s second-largest debit and credit card company, sees business booming from selling data to retailers, banks and governments on spending patterns found in the payments it processes, a top executive told Reuters. MasterCard, which handles payments for 2 billion cardholders and tens of millions of merchants, uses that information to generate real-time data on consumer trends, available more quickly that regular government statistics. “It is an incredibly fast growing area for us,” Ann Cairns, who heads MasterCard’s business outside North America, said in an interview, stressing that the company respects cardholder privacy, using anonymous data rather than personal information. Who Owns Your Customer Database in the Cloud | @CloudExpo #Cloud

The question of who owns the data is partly determined by the kind of cloud infrastructure that is in place for your business. The advantages that cloud based hosting brings needs to reiteration. Cloud hosting is infinitely scalable, needs radically lower CapEx and with distributed hosting, it is much more fail-proof than data hosted on your premise. But the recent legal spar between Apple and the US government has brought the limelight once again back on the debate about ownership of data. In the case of Apple, the fight is over decrypting the iPhone used by a criminal in order for the government to hack in. But the case may as well be between law enforcement and a web host over data stored by your customers on your startup service. In such a case, who owns the data? Before we discuss this, it is important to identify the various kinds of cloud hosting services pre... (more)

Value of Unlocking Legacy Applications | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Analytics

The Value of Unlocking Legacy Applications By Craig Marble, Sr. Director, Legacy Modernization Services, Astadia There's an impulse to roll one's eyes and think of legacy applications as problematic, almost by definition. They're old, and they may run on hardware that's slower or more difficult to maintain. But in many instances, that's too simplistic an assessment. Would you respond the same way to an older bottle of a Grand Cru Bordeaux? For many state and federal agencies, the data and the processes associated with legacy applications take on a similar rarified value. There may be years of insights bound up in that older database, processes that have been tried, tested and streamlined over years of use. That data and those processes may be an essential part of what enables an agency to meet its stakeholder needs. Rather than viewing it as a creaky old system that ... (more)
