Why Are APIs So Popular? | @ExpoDX @AndyThurai #API #IoT #IIoT #SmartCities #DigitalTransformation

Kin Lane recently wrote a couple of blogs about why copyrighting an API is not common. I couldn’t agree more that copyrighting APIs is uncommon. First of all, the API definition is just an interface (It is the implementation detail that is important, and needs to be guarded), so it doesn’t make any sense to copyright an interface. (It is almost like copyrighting a pretty face ). Secondly, the whole idea of exposing an API is you are looking for others to finish the work you started by just providing the plumbing work. Why would anyone want to get involved with a copyrighted API and finish your work for you? Kin Lane says, “API copyright would prevent the reuse and remix of common or successful API patterns within a space. We are at a point where aggregating common, popular APIs into single, standardized interfaces is emerging as the next evolution in web and mobil... (more)

ARM Server to Transform #BigData to #IoT | @CloudExpo #IIoT #AI #ML #DX

A completely new computing platform is on the horizon. They're called Microservers by some, ARM Servers by others, and sometimes even ARM-based Servers. No matter what you call them, Microservers will have a huge impact on the data center and on server computing in general. What Is a Microserver...and What Isn't Although few people are familiar with Microservers today, their impact will be felt very soon. This is a new category of computing platform that is available today and is predicted to have triple-digit growth rates for some years to come - growing to over 20% of the server market by 2016 according to Oppenheimer ("Cloudy With A Chance of ARM" Oppenheimer Equity Research Industry Report). According to Chris Piedmonte, CEO of Suvola Corporation - a software and services company focused on creating preconfigured and scalable Microserver appliances for deployin... (more)

Examining the True Cost of Big Data

The good news about the Big Data market is that we generally all agree on the definition of Big Data, which has come to be known as data that has volume, velocity and variety where businesses need to collect, store, manage and analyze in order to derive business value or otherwise known as the "4 V's." However, the problem with such a broad definition is that it can mean different things to different people once you start to put some real values next to those V's. Let's be honest, Volume can be a different thing to different organizations. To some it is anything above 10 terabytes of managed data in their BI environment and to others it is petabyte scale and nothing less. Likewise velocity can be multi-billions of daily records coming into the enterprise from various external and internal networks. When it really comes down to it, each business situation will be qu... Microsoft-Nokia: An Open Letter from Ballmer and Elop

In an Open Letter published yesterday, September 2, 2013, on The Official Microsoft Blog at Microsoft's TechWeb site, Steve Ballmer and Stephen Elop wrote to Microsoft stakeholders the following: "Nokia and Microsoft have always dreamed big – we dreamed of putting a computer on every desk, and a mobile phone in every pocket, and we’ve come a long way toward realizing those dreams. Today marks a moment of reinvention. Nokia has an identity spanning 150 years of heritage, innovation, excellence, and change which began and will continue in Finland and around the world. From humble beginnings as a paper mill factory, to manufacturing rubber boots and car tires, and then to mobile phones, reinvention is in Nokia’s blood. Nokia will now write its next chapter, focused on enabling mobility through its leadership in networking, mapping & location, and advanced technologies. For... (more)

How Platfora Is Transforming Hadoop

When talking with the less-technical people in your enterprise, which may include end users and many others on the leadership team, it always pays to have non technical expressions to describe new capabilities. Here are some thoughts on Platfora that may be of use in discussions like that. Here is how to describe Platfora to a non-technical person: Platfora gives users a better ability to interact with information. They can ask their own questions, follow their own theories, run their own “what-if” scenarios, and ask unbounded questions in iterative ways over their data. To a user, Platfora provides subsecond-interactive, responsive visualizations and analytical tools. Users can interact with data even before they know what they are looking for. To a user, Platfora is a fast, interactive analytical tool that lets them make sense over more data than they ever though... (more)

Big Data Isn’t About the Database, It’s About the Application

"Big Data analytics will shape the form of nearly every process going forward in time, from the color of the latest fashions, what the candidates say in one town versus another to the chemical composition of the latest super drug," noted Steve Knodl, Director of Product Management at NextIO, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. "Whether these are considered "new" products," Knodl continued, "or continuous improvement on previous processes is largely in the eyes of the beholder." Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? - "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility." Steve Knodl: Disagree. The cost savings is what brings agility to the masses and grows the market. Without both aspects, cloud computing is just expensive outsourcing. Large cash-rich firms co... (more)

I’m Not Scared of #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #APM #CD #Docker #Monitoring

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project. Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a misunderstanding around Operations real purp... DevOps Summit Was a Terrific Event! | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #BigData #IoT #Microservices

DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us. The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days. We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people! My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with RingCentral on Devops for BigData. I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of. The Grid Dynamics folks were showcasing their technology called Agile Software Factory that pre-packages many popular open source technologies and tools into a fully integrated technology suite for continuous delivery pipeline, from code changes to production updates. Qubell is used by the Agile... (more)

This talk will focus on key areas to consider for securing end to end, from dev to prod. We will discuss patterns for end to end TLS, session management, scaling to absorb attacks and mitigation techniques.
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...

With the mainstreaming of IoT, connected devices, and sensors, data is being generated at a phenomenal rate, particularly at the edge of the network. IDC's FutureScape for IoT report found that by 2019, 40% of IoT data will be stored, processed, analyzed and acted upon at the edge of the network where it is created. Why at the edge? Turns out that sensor data, in most cases, is perishable. Its value is realized within a narrow window after its creation. Further, analytics at the edge provides o...
