What Does a Third Era Network Look Like? By @MatMathews | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

There has been a great deal of discussion lately surrounding the concept of how the Internet of Things will change everything

You may have noticed that we’ve been spending some time out west demonstrating our big data fabrics and sharing our vision for the third era of networking. You’ll be seeing more meet-ups and live demonstrations in the near future, so keep an eye on the blog and on Twitter to see where we are headed next. In the meantime, can you name the 5 main characteristics of a third era network? Hint: the answer is somewhere on the Plexxi website. Tweet us your answers for the chance to win some Plexxi swag. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Below please find a few of our top picks for our favorite news articles of the week. Enjoy!

InformationWeek: 8 Ways IoT Will Change IT Forever
By Andrew Froehlich
There has been a great deal of discussion lately surrounding the concept of how the Internet of Things (IoT) will change everything. But very little of it really dives into the nuts and bolts of how IoT could dramatically change the roles and opportunities for those of us who work within IT. Here are eight ways we think IT will change in an IoT world. We’re focusing on areas of IT that are likely to see a significant change in terms of business interest and investment dollars being spent. That said, where the money goes, so to do the jobs. So this article could be seen as a prediction of where the next big IT jobs skills gap will arise.

Data Center Knowledge: Five Ways Next-Gen Data Centers Will Be Different from Today’s
By Bill Kleyman
Cloud and virtualization will become the normal for the modern data center as new technologies improve density, efficiency and management. There is clear growth in both virtualization and cloud services all over the world. In fact, a recent Gartner report goes on to say that cloud computing will become the bulk of new IT spending by 2016. “In India, cloud services revenue is projected to have a five-year projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.2 percent from 2012 through 2017 across all segments of the cloud computing market. Segments such as software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) have even higher projected CAGR growth rates of 34.4 percent and 39.8 percent,” said Ed Anderson, research director at Gartner. “Cloud computing continues to grow at rates much higher than IT spending generally. Growth in cloud services is being driven by new IT computing scenarios being deployed using cloud models, as well as the migration of traditional IT services to cloud service alternatives.”

RCR Wireless News: Report: Enterprises target SDN, service orchestration to bolster data centers
By Dan Meyer
The market for software-defined networking solutions is expected to blossom over the next several years, with robust SDN opportunities for both incumbent and new entrants, according to a new report from Infonetics Research. The report, “Data Center SDN Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey,” found that 79% of the 153 medium-sized and large businesses surveyed plan to deploy live SDN solutions in data centers by the end of 2017. Those deployment plans look set to favor the more-established players in the market, although Infonetics said it was surprised by the number of enterprise customers also looking at alternatives.

Enterprise Networking Planet: Reassessing the Network Edge in the Age of SDN
By Arthur Cole
Among all the changes taking place in the data center these days, an entirely new network edge is one of the most critical for the enterprise. The edge has always been a crucial component of the data center, but by and large its responsibilities have centered on security and connectivity. With distributed architectures coming to the fore, many organizations are finding that the edge needs to be a lot more flexible, and intelligent, in order to fully support evolving business models.

When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it’s important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. “Fly two mistakes high” is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee A...
