Demonstrating Big Data Fabrics By @PlexxiInc | @BigDataExpo [#BigData]

Our top picks for our favorite news articles of the week

If you’ve been following us on the blog or on social media, you know that we announced our partnership with Big Data platform provider Cloudera last month. And, that a few months ago, our own Ed Henry demonstrated how to construct Big Data fabrics that easily integrate with systems like OpenStack and Cloudera during an installation of SDxCentral’s DemoFriday series. That webinar was recently published on SDxCentral’s website. You can watch the full presentation here to see the next generation of data fabrics in action. Enjoy!

Below please find a few of our top picks for our favorite news articles of the week. Have a great weekend!

Enterprise Networking Planet: The Future of White Box Networking in the Enterprise
By Arthur Cole
It seems that the farther along we get on the road to SDx, the more pertinent question is, what role will white box play in an increasingly distributed network environment? To be sure, white box hardware will see a dramatic rise in web-facing hyperscale operations in the years to come, but the advantages the technology brings to the table start to erode as scale drops. This means the traditional enterprise facility, which still has a vital role to play in the emerging data ecosystem, won’t benefit as much from the conversion to commodity solutions.

EdTech: Colleges Move to Software-Defined Data Centers
By Steve Zurier
On the plains of Canyon, Texas, West Texas A&M University plans to deploy a software-defined data center (SDDC), recognizing that it will take a few years to reach that goal. CIO James Webb says West Texas A&M deployed server virtualization in 2008 and today runs 250 VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines across 10 physical servers. “We’ve built a virtualized private cloud to support the growth of the campus,” Webb says. “It has given us the ability to scale and be more agile, providing IT resources and the ability to spin up academic services, such as online courses.”

The Enterprisers Project: 3 New trends that are pressuring CIOs
By Minda Zetlin
What trends are likely to post the biggest problems for IT during the next couple of years? Ty Rollin, CTO of the mobile technology company Mobiquity, takes a look at some of the issues CIOs and CTOs will be facing going forward. 1. Change Management: “Change management is becoming a block to agile business,” Rollin warns. “It is preventing the adoption of faster, better business processes.” The problem, he says, is that the speed of technological change is way beyond the control of corporate IT departments or tech leaders. “The depth of change is being highlighted by hackers,” he adds. “For instance, Heartbleed and other malware show that not changing and not actively testing your own systems means you will get hacked.”

Channel Partners: 3 Horsemen of the Network Apocalypse: SDN
By Art Wittmann
If there ever was a day in the ICT market where purely technical discussions drove the evolution of technology and standards, they’ve long since passed. The original idea of software-defined networking was that routing traffic based simply on a determination of the lowest-cost path ignored all sorts of interesting possibilities. Traffic could be routed on a certain path for reasons of security, for example, or because of the application that created it (video traffic goes this way, voice goes that way and data traffic goes a third way).

Forbes: Software-Defined Networking: Opportunities And Challenges
By Swift Liu
Software-Defined Networking (SDN), originally implemented in data centers, has become a popular discussion topic across the ICT industry. It has helped companies adjust network structures and configure Virtual Machines (VMs) to address constantly changing data center requirements. Pre-SDN, this had never been an easy task, especially for networks required to support multiple technologies such as mobile services, cloud computing, social media, Big Data, and the Internet of Everything (IoE). The absence of SDN made the delivery of real-time service transmissions, scalable mobile networks, and enhanced user experiences considerably more complex.

@BigDataExpo Stories
"Evatronix provides design services to companies that need to integrate the IoT technology in their products but they don't necessarily have the expertise, knowledge and design team to do so," explained Adam Morawiec, VP of Business Development at Evatronix, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Smart cities have the potential to change our lives at so many levels for citizens: less pollution, reduced parking obstacles, better health, education and more energy savings. Real-time data streaming and the Internet of Things (IoT) possess the power to turn this vision into a reality. However, most organizations today are building their data infrastructure to focus solely on addressing immediate business needs vs. a platform capable of quickly adapting emerging technologies to address future ...

Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. It must do so by realizing that we now live in a data-driven age, and that technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, the IoT, Cognitive Computing, and Blockchain are only tools. In her general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Rebecca Wanta explained how the strategy must focus on DX and include a commitment from top management to create great IT jobs, monitor ...
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It’s clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Tha...
