Internet of Things (IoT), Docker and DevOps @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley

With Docker, applications are shipped using a common container format and managed with a high-level API

Containerization Is More than the New Virtualization

Docker offers a new, lightweight approach to application portability. Applications are shipped using a common container format and managed with a high-level API. Their processes run within isolated namespaces that abstract the operating environment independently of the distribution, versions, network setup, and other details of this environment.

This "containerization" has often been nicknamed "the new virtualization." But containers are more than lightweight virtual machines. Beyond their smaller footprint, shorter boot times, and higher consolidation factors, they also bring a lot of new features and use cases that were not possible with classical virtual machines.

In his session at DevOps Summit, Jerome Petazzoni, Senior Engineer at Docker, will focus on one of those features: separation of operational concerns. Specifically, he will demonstrate how some fundamental tasks like logging, remote access, backups, and troubleshooting can be entirely decoupled from the deployment of applications and services. This decoupling results in independent, smaller, simpler moving parts; just like microservice architectures break down large monolithic apps in more manageable components.

Speaker Bio:
Jerome Petazzoni is a senior engineer at Docker, where he helps others to containerize all the things. In another life he built and operated Xen clouds when EC2 was just the name of a plane, developed a GIS to deploy fiber interconnects through the French subway, managed commando deployments of large-scale video streaming systems in bandwidth-constrained environments such as conference centers, operated and scale the dotCloud PAAS, and various other feats of technical wizardry. When annoyed, he threatens to replace things with a very small shell script.

Using Docker For a Complex IoT Application

Aater Suleman, CEO & Co-Founder at Flux7, is an industry veteran in performance optimization on servers and distributed systems. He earned his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also currently teaches computer systems design and architecture. His current interests are in optimizing DevOps and reducing cloud costs.

In his @ThingsExpo presentation, Aaater Suleman will discuss DevOps, Linux containers, Docker in developing a complex Internet of Things application.

The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet, it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of items.

Flux7 is a consulting group with a focus on helping organizations build, maintain and optimize DevOps processes. The group has a wide view across DevOps challenges and benefits, including:

  • The distinct challenge of a skills shortage in this area and how organizations are coping to meet demands with limited resources.
  • The technical requirements: From stacks to scripts, and what works.
  • The practical and political challenges: Beyond the stacks and the human element is a critical success factor in DevOps.

Recently at Flux7, we developed an end-to-end Internet of Things project that received sensor data to provide reports to service-provider end users. Our client asked us to support multiple service providers for his new business venture. We knew that rearchitecting the application to incorporate major changes would prove to be both time-consuming and expensive for our client. It also would have required a far more complicated, rigid and difficult-to-maintain codebase.

We had been exploring the potential of using Docker to set up Flux7's internal development environments, and, based on our findings, believed we could use it in order to avoid a major application rewrite. So, we decided to use Docker containers to provide quick, easy, and inexpensive multi-tenancy by creating isolated environments for running app tier multiple instances for each provider.

What is Docker?
Docker provides a user-friendly layer on top of Linux Containers (LXCs). LXCs provide operating-system-level virtualization by limiting a process's resources. In addition to using the chroot command to change accessible directories for a given process, Docker effectively provides isolation of one group of processes from other files and system processes without the expense of running another operating system. "What we see what happens when you have a completely networked society and the potential to now drive the value creation and the collaboration and the ecosystems that are possible when you start to be able to connect people and industries together in ways that have never been possible before," explained Esmeralda Swartz, VP of Marketing Enterprise & Cloud at Ericsson, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Companies can harness IoT and predictive analytics to sustain business continuity; predict and manage site performance during emergencies; minimize expensive reactive maintenance; and forecast equipment and maintenance budgets and expenditures. Providing cost-effective, uninterrupted service is challenging, particularly for organizations with geographically dispersed operations.
