More than Education

New Networking Passes Increase Access, Collaboration
LinuxCon and CloudOpen are widely recognized for both top-notch technical content and networking opportunities. These conferences are designed to encourage collaboration and connection that can lead to advances in technology, new ideas for open source projects, job opportunities and more.

The Linux Foundation for the first time this year will offer Networking Passes, which will include access to these unique opportunities to anyone. The Networking Pass will get attendees into all events except the conference sessions. The pass is $250 through June 6, 2014 and $300 thereafter.

Women in OSS Luncheon
The Linux Foundation will host for the second year in a row a Women in Open Source Luncheon at LinuxCon and CloudOpen. The luncheon will be free and will take place Thursday, August 21, 2014. This is a networking opportunity for women in open source to connect and learn from each other. Registration for the Women in OSS Luncheon will open July 1, 2014.

The Linux Foundation is also offering scholarships for women who want to attend LinuxCon and CloudOpen but are not sponsored by a company or do not have personal funds to attend. To apply, please visit: https://docs.google.com/a/linuxfoundation.org/forms/d/1eTxpMWCIQnK2aX_s-XQhsU2UPTWS0ggQFFB5w9nI354/viewform.

Newcomers Reception
The Linux Foundation this year will host a Newcomers Reception on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. It's important for the Linux Foundation to reach out to new speakers and attendees and encourage their participation in these events. The reception will help maximize the experience for first-time attendees and speakers who might otherwise not be inclined to introduce themselves to other attendees throughout the conference. By hosting this the night before LinuxCon + CloudOpen begin, the organization hopes it will increase interactions throughout the week and give new attendees the opportunity to meet some of the key Linux kernel contributors who will be attendance. Registration is open to first-time attendees only at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/17GYWJveYeQ2Vz3-n6BVZD7QCiAJEjv5OzSNmriOKmOo/viewform.

LinuxCon and CloudOpen are made possible with generous support from sponsors including LinuxCon Diamond sponsor Cisco; LinuxCon Platinum sponsors HP, and IBM; CloudOpen Platinum sponsors Citrix and HP; and LinuxCon Gold sponsors Google, Intel and Samsung.

For a full list of sponsors, please visit: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-north-america/sponsor and http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/cloudopen-north-america.

Early registration closes for both events June 6, 2014, after which the price will increase $150 to $750 through July 18, and to $850 after that. One pass gets attendees into both events. To register for LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America, please visit:

@BigDataExpo Stories
Technology today seems to be moving at breakneck speeds. This speed of change is creating tectonic shifts in how businesses operate and leverage technology to achieve their goals. The convergence of key disruptive technologies (i.e., social, mobile, analytics, and cloud) is what Gartner refers to as the nexus of forces. Cloud is an underpinning of this nexus. How is this disruption impacting the CIO? Does the role change in the face of all these forces, or is it just a continuation of what the C...
Cloud is not a commodity. And no matter what you call it, computing doesn’t come out of the sky. It comes from physical hardware inside brick and mortar facilities connected by hundreds of miles of networking cable. And no two clouds are built the same way. SoftLayer gives you the highest performing cloud infrastructure available. One platform that takes data centers around the world that are full of the widest range of cloud computing options, and then integrates and automates everything. J...
In the midst of the widespread popularity and adoption of cloud computing, it seems like everything is being offered “as a Service” these days: Infrastructure? Check. Platform? You bet. Software? Absolutely. Toaster? It’s only a matter of time. With service providers positioning vastly differing offerings under a generic “cloud” umbrella, it’s all too easy to get confused about what’s actually being offered. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Kevin Hazard, Director of Digital Content for SoftL...

When it comes to building applications, one database definitely does not fit all. Traditional SQL databases are great for storing highly structured, normalized data and performing analytics and reporting. NoSQL has attracted developers with its awesome flexibility, and JSON-centric document stores like Cloudant make web developers incredibly productive by offering a JavaScript environment from end-to-end. Recent Big Data challenges have driven the need for a distributed approach to analytics e...
