WHEN:

  • APIStrat Tech Un-Workshop at Gluecon – Lorinda Brandon and Michael Giller speaking on Track 1 Panel, API Service Descriptions and Discovery – Tuesday, May 20, 2014, 1:00 p.m. MDT
  • “Exploring Approaches for Maliciously Hacking APIs and How to Prevent Them,” Presented by Michael Giller – Wednesday, May 21, 2014, 2:45 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. MDT
  • Keynote: “After the Breathlessness: What We Need to Figure Out About IoT,” Presented by Lorinda Brandon – Thursday, May 22, 10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. MDT

WHERE: Omni Interlocken Resort, 500 Interlocken Blvd, Broomfield, Colorado

During the APIStrat Tech Un-Workshop, the Track 1 panel explores the differences between emerging API metadata formats including API Blueprint, Swagger, RAML and Hypermedia Profiles, all providing different ways of modeling and defining an API, their commonalities and differences as well projecting what might be needed in the future. The panel explores how to promote machine readable format adoption and discovery of published formats and instances of APIs. Lorinda and Michael are joined by expert panelists Jakub Nestril of Apiary; Tony Tam of Reverb; Jerome Louvel of Restlet; Kin Lane, API Evangelist; Steven Willmott of 3scale; and Mike Amundsen of API Academy.

In his presentation, “Exploring Approaches for Maliciously Hacking APIs and How to Prevent Them,” Michael Giller puts on his hacker-cloak to demonstrate how one can attempt to break into an API using common malicious approaches – injection attacks, fuzzing, session spoofing, cross-site scripting and the like are all useful and extremely powerful weapons if the target isn't prepared. Michael is Sales Engineer for SoapUI, the most used API testing tool in the world. Follow him on Twitter @GillerMichael.

In her presentation, “After the Breathlessness: What We Need to Figure Out About IoT,” Lorinda explores the reality check needed with the Internet of Things (IoT). We can build solutions faster than we can devise safe and thorough ways to test them, we can figure out how to pass data between our devices faster than we can figure out the security and legal implications, and we can put new IoT apps on the market sooner than we can figure out how to make them easy to buy and install. While the possibilities with IoT are exciting, we need to examine next steps.

Lorinda has worked in the high tech industry for various companies, including Mashery, RR Donnelley, EMC, Kayak Software, Exit41 and Intuit, among others. She is a strong advocate for women in IT, promoting the importance of closing the gender gap for upcoming generations. Follow her on Twitter @lindybrandon.

@BigDataExpo Stories
We certainly live in interesting technological times. And no more interesting than the current competing IoT standards for connectivity. Various standards bodies, approaches, and ecosystems are vying for mindshare and positioning for a competitive edge. It is clear that when the dust settles, we will have new protocols, evolved protocols, that will change the way we interact with devices and infrastructure. We will also have evolved web protocols, like HTTP/2, that will be changing the very core...
Operational Hadoop and the Lambda Architecture for Streaming Data Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a large-scale, aggregate view. One architecture useful for capturing...

The explosion of connected devices / sensors is creating an ever-expanding set of new and valuable data. In parallel the emerging capability of Big Data technologies to store, access, analyze, and react to this data is producing changes in business models under the umbrella of the Internet of Things (IoT). In particular within the Insurance industry, IoT appears positioned to enable deep changes by altering relationships between insurers, distributors, and the insured. In his session at @Things...
Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of bein...
Performance is the intersection of power, agility, control, and choice. If you value performance, and more specifically consistent performance, you need to look beyond simple virtualized compute. Many factors need to be considered to create a truly performant environment. In his General Session at 15th Cloud Expo, Harold Hannon, Sr. Software Architect at SoftLayer, discussed how to take advantage of a multitude of compute options and platform features to make cloud the cornerstone of your onlin...
Even as cloud and managed services grow increasingly central to business strategy and performance, challenges remain. The biggest sticking point for companies seeking to capitalize on the cloud is data security. Keeping data safe is an issue in any computing environment, and it has been a focus since the earliest days of the cloud revolution. Understandably so: a lot can go wrong when you allow valuable information to live outside the firewall. Recent revelations about government snooping, along...

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly in the process of breaking from its heretofore relatively obscure enterprise applications (such as plant floor control and supply chain management) and going mainstream into the consumer space. More and more creative folks are interconnecting everyday products such as household items, mobile devices, appliances and cars, and unleashing new and imaginative scenarios. We are seeing a lot of excitement around applications in home automation, personal fitness,...
Every innovation or invention was originally a daydream. You like to imagine a “what-if” scenario. And with all the attention being paid to the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) you don’t have to stretch the imagination too much to see how this may impact commercial and homeowners insurance. We’re beyond the point of accepting this as a leap of faith. The groundwork is laid. Now it’s just a matter of time. We can thank the inventors of smart thermostats for developing a practical business a...
Data-intensive companies that strive to gain insights from data using Big Data analytics tools can gain tremendous competitive advantage by deploying data-centric storage. Organizations generate large volumes of data, the vast majority of which is unstructured. As the volume and velocity of this unstructured data increases, the costs, risks and usability challenges associated with managing the unstructured data (regardless of file type, size or device) increases simultaneously, including end-to-...
The excitement around the possibilities enabled by Big Data is being tempered by the daunting task of feeding the analytics engines with high quality data on a continuous basis. As the once distinct fields of data integration and data management increasingly converge, cloud-based data solutions providers have emerged that can buffer your organization from the complexities of this continuous data cleansing and management so that you’re free to focus on the end goal: actionable insight.
With several hundred implementations of IoT-enabled solutions in the past 12 months alone, this session will focus on experience over the art of the possible. Many can only imagine the most advanced telematics platform ever deployed, supporting millions of customers, producing tens of thousands events or GBs per trip, and hundreds of TBs per month. With the ability to support a billion sensor events per second, over 30PB of warm data for analytics, and hundreds of PBs for an data analytics arc...
