Independent Analyst Firm Cites Teradata as Market Leader in Analytic Database Platforms

Report states: Teradata "scores the highest on high-performance analytics and deployment"

DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Teradata Corp. (NYSE: TDC), the leading analytic data platforms, applications and services company, today announced that Ovum Ltd., a leading global technology analyst firm, has placed the Teradata Aster Discovery Platform in the Market Leaders category in the "Technology" and "Execution" categories among top vendors of analytic database platforms. The report, Ovum Decision Matrix: Selecting an Analytic Database 2013–14, by Surya Mukherjee and Madan Sheina, was released January 14, 2014.

In the report, Ovum stated that Teradata "scores the highest among the group on high-performance analytics and deployment, and we believe it is one of the most innovative solutions on the market today, with a secure place among market leaders." Ovum goes on to say that "Teradata also stands out due to its focus on unification of different data-processing engines within the Teradata family and due to its management, coordination, and routing of analytics to the right engine. With the help of its Unified Data Architecture (UDA) and SNAP framework, Teradata can coordinate query processing between SQL, SQL-MR, and SQL-GR, and multiple data stores, such as row, column, and file store. At this point, no other analytics platform provider offers the same capability to manage queries across SQL and Hadoop/NoSQL engines."

Ovum categorizes and evaluates analytic databases across three main categories: advanced SQL databases (designed around MPP and columnar-based structures), in-memory databases, and NoSQL databases. Ovum named Teradata as a Market Leader, which the firm defines as representing "the leading solutions that we believe are worthy of a place on most technology selection shortlists," – a special category where "the vendor has established a commanding market position with a product that is widely accepted as best-of-breed."

The report further states: "Teradata Aster Discovery Platform's SQL-MapReduce stands out as a practical way for enterprises to bridge the SQL and NoSQL worlds in an analytic context." This is a reference to the patented SQL-MapReduce framework created by Teradata Aster that lets business analysts leverage the power of MapReduce from any SQL statement without needing to learn MapReduce programming or parallel programming concepts.  The SQL-MapReduce framework allows developers to write powerful and highly expressive SQL-MapReduce functions in languages such as Java, C#, Python, C++, and R and push them into the discovery platform for advanced in-database analytics. Analysts can then invoke SQL-MapReduce functions using standard SQL.

Finally, the report concludes that "Teradata boasts one of the industry's deepest stack integrations of the Aster Database into the Apache Hadoop environment" and "The Teradata Aster Discovery Platform shines when used for multi-structured data exploration. The solution complements existing EDW environments well and is supported by Teradata's mainstream database management software and Infiniband connections under a tightly unified architecture."

"The new Ovum report recognizes the extraordinary value and power of our analytic platforms – lifting us above and beyond the capabilities of other solutions in a noisy and competitive market. This underscores that we are meeting and exceeding our objectives – and our customers' – both economically and technologically," said Scott Gnau, President, Teradata Labs. "Our solution design approach is to prioritize economic value first – in the context of high-performance innovation – which is why Teradata analytic platforms create both business loyalty and technological excitement among our customers."

Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound...
