Disaster Recovery Download: Disaster Recovery and Data Storage

According to industry analysts, the amount of data that companies collect and store is growing at an unprecedented rate. IT resources are being increasingly channeled to store, analyze and retrieve this data in order to leverage it for a variety of purposes (generally referred to under the umbrella of “big data”). However, with this increasing reliance on data comes added risk. Companies no longer just have to focus on mission-critical applications and data, but also petabytes of information that was previously seen as less important to protect. In this week’s Disaster Recovery Download we focus on the intersection of big data, backup and all things DR. Enjoy!

Disaster Recovery and the Big Data Application

In the first article for Database Journal, Lockwood Lyon analyzes the intersection between disaster recovery and big data. He writes that with the additional importance being placed on stored information, data that was one perceived as auxiliary could eventually be listed as “mission critical,” and therefore required to be available should a disaster occur. Lockwood argues that the status quo of data is shifting from the perspective of IT professionals and that the way we protect our information merits a second look.

Data Storage’s Changing Status Quo

The IT industry is changing rapidly, and storage is right there to change alongside it. In this article from Enterprise Storage Forum, Henry Newman looks at the shifting trends in the industry and IT professional’s increased reliance on cutting edge technologies in the storage market. Newman not only looks to recent changes in storage devices themselves, but also at what is to come in the future.

Disaster Recovery and Virtual Server Backup Top 2014 Storage Projects

The final article from this week’s DR Download highlights the results of the 2014 Computer Weekly/TechTarget IT priorities survey. In this article for ComputerWeekly, Antony Ashead looks at the top line statistics of this survey, specifically the data that asserts that disaster recovery and business continuity are the key backup and storage projects for IT professionals in 2014. Nearly 44% of respondents agreed with this statement, followed by 41.5% that cited virtual server backup as a top priority.

DXWorldEXPO Digital Transformation Stories
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework. It's clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Th...
Docker and Kubernetes are key elements of modern cloud native deployment automations. After building your microservices, common practice is to create docker images and create YAML files to automate the deployment with Docker and Kubernetes. Writing these YAMLs, Dockerfile descriptors are really painful and error prone.Ballerina is a new cloud-native programing language which understands the architecture around it - the compiler is environment aware of microservices directly deployable into infra...
When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation. The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data e...

In an age of borderless networks, security for the cloud and security for the corporate network can no longer be separated. Security teams are now presented with the challenge of monitoring and controlling access to these cloud environments, at the same time that developers quickly spin up new cloud instances and executives push forwards new initiatives. The vulnerabilities created by migration to the cloud, such as misconfigurations and compromised credentials, require that security teams t...
AI and machine learning disruption for Enterprises started happening in the areas such as IT operations management (ITOPs) and Cloud management and SaaS apps. In 2019 CIOs will see disruptive solutions for Cloud & Devops, AI/ML driven IT Ops and Cloud Ops. Customers want AI-driven multi-cloud operations for monitoring, detection, prevention of disruptions. Disruptions cause revenue loss, unhappy users, impacts brand reputation etc.
Serverless applications increase developer productivity and time to market, by freeing engineers from spending time on infrastructure provisioning, configuration and management. Serverless also simplifies Operations and reduces cost - as the Kubernetes container infrastructure required to run these applications is automatically spun up and scaled precisely with the workload, to optimally handle all runtime requests. Recent advances in open source technology now allow organizations to run Serv...
