Patriots, Jets Rivalry Means Mass Gridlock in the Boston area Thursday Night

First in a series of reports on the traffic impact of NFL football games

KIRKLAND, Wash., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- First the good news: the NFL game pitting the New England Patriots against the New York Jets doesn't start until 8:25 p.m. Now the bad news: drivers will face a regular evening rush hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. then two more rush hours as thousands of people flock to the stadium between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and leave between 11 p.m. and midnight.

"In short, drivers are looking at 20-30 extra minutes of delay on top of normal rush hour traffic anywhere they go between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday," said Jamie Holter, INRIX Traffic Analyst. "Thursday is the worst traffic day of the week in Boston. And that's on a day without football."

INRIX, a leading international provider of traffic information and driver services, is doing something new in the spirit of the fall football season. INRIX data scientists have poured through mountains of traffic congestion data for our NFL cities to develop the INRIX Pick of the Week for football game day traffic.

Traffic snapshot

  • Drivers who take I-95 from I-93 will spend more than 40 minutes in traffic, about 25 minutes longer than usual at 5 p.m. At 8 p.m., drivers will spend about 30 minutes in traffic.
  • Drivers coming from the west on I-495 from MA-109 will spend about 40 minutes in traffic whether they travel at 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. That's about 20 minutes longer than usual.
  • Drivers using the Boston Providence Highway (US 1) between I-95 and I-495 should plan on a 30-minute trip at both 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., about 15 minutes longer than usual.
  • Local state highways like MA-1A will be especially congested and move more slowly than MA-1 or I-95 between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Early evening congestion will be very light.

To determine the marquee matchup, the data scientists looked at:

  • Nationally televised games.
  • The day of the week knowing that Thursdays are typically the busiest night.
  • Expected attendance.
  • Traffic patterns from the most recent home game and most recent home game on the designated night.

Drivers can download the free INRIX Traffic App available on both Android and iOS to set game time departure alerts, get real-time traffic information to help them navigate through the jams on their way to the game as well as the ability to send your ETA to those you're meeting at the stadium to let them know when you'll arrive.

Over the course of two days, in addition to insightful conversations and presentations delving into the industry's current pressing challenges, there was considerable buzz about digital transformation and how it is enabling global enterprises to accelerate business growth. Blockchain has been a term that people hear but don't quite understand. Where many organizations get into trouble, however, is that they try to have a broad and deep knowledge in each of these areas. This is a huge blow to an organization's productivity. By automating or outsourcing some of these pieces, such as databases, infrastructure, and networks, your team can instead focus on development, testing, and deployment. Further, organizations that focus their attention on these areas can eventually move to a test-driven development structure that condenses several l...
The term "digital transformation" (DX) is being used by everyone for just about any company initiative that involves technology, the web, ecommerce, software, or even customer experience. While the term has certainly turned into a buzzword with a lot of hype, the transition to a more connected, digital world is real and comes with real challenges. At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throug...
Never mind that we might not know what the future holds for cryptocurrencies and how much values will fluctuate or even how the process of mining a coin could cost as much as the value of the coin itself - cryptocurrency mining is a hot industry and shows no signs of slowing down. However, energy consumption to mine cryptocurrency is one of the biggest issues facing this industry. Burning huge amounts of electricity isn't incidental to cryptocurrency, it's basically embedded in the core of "mini...
