W3C Boss Says Cloud Standards Have Resulted in "Confused Patchwork Design"

LONDON, May 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Dr. Jeff Jaffe, the CEO for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), has highlighted the need for more control on global cloud computing standards, in the build-up to this year's Cloud World Forum - http://www.cloudwf.com - at Olympia National Hall, London.

As Chief Executive for W3C, Dr. Jaffe, who is set to give a keynote address at the event on 26th and 27th June, plays a key role alongside World Wide Web inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, in the development of web standards, and has seen the rise of cloud computing lead to changes in the landscape and a variety of issues surrounding global regulations.

Speaking to organisers in advance of the Cloud World Forum, Dr. Jaffe said, "with the rapid growth of a rich multimedia Web, the most interoperable platform in history is transforming both internal IT, as well as several vertical industries.

"The diversity of devices only continues to explode…and with more devices on the Web; some without as much compute power, the cloud is only growing in importance.

"Identifying future trends and needs for standardization is an important focus. In my view, today's cloud standards are often not done at W3C which has resulted in a confused patchwork design… We now need a richer conversation between core Web standards and the cloud."

As an organisation, W3C has set web standards since 1994, and seen the full transition of the World Wide Web to what is more and more commonly being seen as cloud computing, across both the enterprise and in consumer markets. Dr. Jaffe views it as a "natural progression", as technological advancements take precedent:

"The Web has always been a kind of a 'cloud' to share information. With the advent of cloud computing, far more resources are being efficiently shared."

Dr. Jaffe will open the keynote Vision Theatre at the Cloud World Forum, which boasts some of the IT industry's leading experts among its speaker line-up, including Dana Deasy, CIO, BP, Jeff Barr, Chief Evangelist, Amazon Web Services, Oskar Stål, CTO, Spotify and Richard Harris, CIO, ARM and Francisco Garcia Moran, Director General, Informatics, European Commission.

His talk, titled "The Interleaving of Life and Industry", will take place at 10am, and cover some of the core issues that have arisen from the advancement of the web, cloud and HTML5.

Sponsors of the Cloud World Forum include HP, Dell, Oracle, Rackspace, Box, Interoute, Softlayer, Telstra, VCE, Citrix, Cordys and Canopy will be showcasing their latest cloud products and services to visitors.

The show is co-located with two additional symposiums, the Big Data World Congress http://www.bigdatacongress.com and the CDN World Forum http://www.cdnconference.com.
