Sample Solutions: Facebook 'Likes' New Source of Local Health Data

Social Media Reliably Fills in Where Government Data Fall Short

BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/19/13 -- Sample Solutions LLC., in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), today unveiled new research based on an analysis of billions of Likes that consumers have posted on Facebook. The research, available in a white paper, shows that Likes can significantly supplement scarce government data on the behavioral drivers of cancer, diabetes, obesity and other ailments.

Sample Solutions and three representatives of the CDC presented their findings at the 68th Annual Conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research in Boston.

Facebook data were collected using the Facebook Advertising application programming interface in February 2013, aggregating the number of users who express interest in certain categories of items by ZIP code. This ZIP code data were then aggregated to the county level to allow for direct comparisons to government health data.

The result: patterns by which Facebook users express their Likes correlate heavily with the actual presence of many serious health conditions, according to the Sample Solutions analysis, for which a patent is pending.

"There is a cry nationwide for more local data on health, particularly about the behavioral drivers of disease," said Steve Gittelman, Ph.D., president of Sample Solutions. "The few large federal consumer surveys available fail to adequately cover more than 10% of the 3,143 U.S. counties, and these surveys are expensive and burdened with limitations. As a result, most American counties don't fully understand how they differ from each other regarding the behavioral determinants of disease and, most important, how to mitigate those differences."

According to government data, in Fayette County, Georgia, the average life expectancy is 80.6 years, while just a few hours' drive east in Jefferson County, the average is eight years less.

The new research confirms the following:

1. Likes provide a means of categorizing communities (counties).
2. Likes can be used as an indicator of mortality.
3. Likes can be used as an indicator of disease outcomes (obesity, diabetes, chronic heart disease).
4. Likes can be used as an indicator of the behaviors that impact disease.

"Our analysis, along with additional research based on online data, will help local, state and federal governments to understand the drivers behind such disparities," said Gittelman. "Our ultimate goal is to provide actionable intelligence that directly impacts government spending and public policy at a fraction of the cost of traditional research."

Over the course of two days, in addition to insightful conversations and presentations delving into the industry's current pressing challenges, there was considerable buzz about digital transformation and how it is enabling global enterprises to accelerate business growth. Blockchain has been a term that people hear but don't quite understand. The most common myths about blockchain include the assumption that it is private, or that there is only one blockchain, and the idea that blockchain is...

Where many organizations get into trouble, however, is that they try to have a broad and deep knowledge in each of these areas. This is a huge blow to an organization's productivity. By automating or outsourcing some of these pieces, such as databases, infrastructure, and networks, your team can instead focus on development, testing, and deployment. Further, organizations that focus their attention on these areas can eventually move to a test-driven development structure that condenses several l...
The term "digital transformation" (DX) is being used by everyone for just about any company initiative that involves technology, the web, ecommerce, software, or even customer experience. While the term has certainly turned into a buzzword with a lot of hype, the transition to a more connected, digital world is real and comes with real challenges. In his opening keynote, Four Essentials To Become DX Hero Status Now, Jonathan Hoppe, Co-Founder and CTO of Total Uptime Technologies, shared that ...
At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throug...
Never mind that we might not know what the future holds for cryptocurrencies and how much values will fluctuate or even how the process of mining a coin could cost as much as the value of the coin itself - cryptocurrency mining is a hot industry and shows no signs of slowing down. However, energy consumption to mine cryptocurrency is one of the biggest issues facing this industry. Burning huge amounts of electricity isn't incidental to cryptocurrency, it's basically embedded in the core of "mini...
Cloud-Native thinking and Serverless Computing are now the norm in financial services, manufacturing, telco, healthcare, transportation, energy, media, entertainment, retail and other consumer industries, as well as the public sector.
