Veteran Tech Lawyers Gil Arie and Paul Sweeney Named to Co-Chair Foley Hoag’s Technology Industry Practice

Foley Hoag LLP has named two partners with decades of experience in technology, legal and financial issues to co-chair its Technology Industry Practice.

Partners Gil Arie and Paul Sweeney will lead the practice, which is one of Foley Hoag’s largest with a combination of early-stage and established clients, including LevelUp, uTest, Linkable Networks and EMC Corporation. The Technology Practice recently launched TEC@FoleyHoag, a monthly meet-up and ongoing resource for technology industry entrepreneurs, investors and professionals. It is based in Boston’s Innovation District, where Foley Hoag is headquartered.

Gil Arie practices in the areas of emerging companies, venture capital, “angel” funds, mergers and acquisitions, cross- border transactions and general corporate law. He focuses his work in enterprise software, analytics, cloud computing, storage and databases, virtualization, networks and infrastructure, physical and computer security, electronic media, e-commerce, telecom and mobile technologies, water technologies, and medical devices. Much of his work with emerging and established companies focuses on equity and debt financing transactions, and on general corporate and business matters. Mr. Arie has developed deep expertise in assisting management teams in the process of scaling and accelerating the growth of their companies. Mr. Arie’s international experience extends to assisting early-stage and mature foreign companies operating in the U.S. to structure, form and conduct business operations, and assisting U.S. companies to structure, form and conduct business operations abroad. He is an industry leader in assisting Israeli startups with raising capital in the U.S., assisting U.S. investors in Israel, and representing Israeli and U.S. buyers and sellers in U.S.-Israel M&A transactions. Mr. Arie serves as a mentor and judge at the Harvard Business School Business Plan Competition, and is a frequent moderator and speaker at industry events. Mr. Arie is a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Israel Business Council.

Paul Sweeney practices in the areas of venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate law. Mr. Sweeney focuses on the organizational, operational and transactional needs of startups, emerging companies and growth-stage companies in a wide array of industries, including hi-tech, social media, Web 2.0, mobile networking, computer security, enterprise software, communications and medical services. He also represents top-tier venture capital firms in connection with their portfolio investments. Mr. Sweeney was recently listed as one of the “Top 20 Startup Lawyers in Boston,” and one of the “Ten Most Innovative Lawyers in America” by the ABA Journal. Mr. Sweeney has served as a mentor in the MIT $100k Entrepreneurship Competition and a judge in the Harvard Business School Business Plan Competition, and has been a guest lecturer at MIT’s Venture Capital/Private Equity Club, Harvard Business School and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
