The Green Grid Announces An All-Star Speaker Lineup At Forum 2013, One Of The Largest Resource Efficiency Events Of The Year

Industry Experts, Policy-Makers and Technology Providers from Around the Globe Will Gather to Explore the Future of Resource Efficiency in IT and Data Centers

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Green Grid, the global authority on resource efficient information technology and data centers, is pleased to announce the full event agenda and presentation topics for its Sixth Annual Forum and Members Meeting. The two-day event will feature sessions led by leading companies and organizations from around the globe, including eBay, EMC, the Environmental Protection Agency, Google, Microsoft and many more.

The Green Grid Forum 2013 will be held March 5-6, 2013 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif. The event will be one of the largest gatherings of resource efficient IT experts in the country. For two days, representatives from government, industry, the non-profit sector and member companies of The Green Grid will exchange ideas, collaborate, discuss and debate ways to improve the resource efficiency and sustainability of data centers and the IT industry as a whole.

"On a global scale we're seeing more and more engagement from both industry and government to make significant strides towards a more resource efficient and sustainable future in data centers and beyond," said John Pflueger, Dell representative and Board Member of The Green Grid. "The Green Grid Forum is more than just another IT event, it's a gathering of the top minds from all spectrums of resource efficiency that come together to not only share results, but to generate ideas that will dramatically improve our industry – and ultimately our planet."

Forum 2013, which is The Green Grid's largest event of the year, will host more than 30 sessions and will provide attendees with the unique opportunity to engage with peers, customers, governing bodies and industry representatives all under the same roof. The event's sessions will fall under four key pillars: The Value of Collaborative Regulatory Activity, Software and IT Hardware Efficiencies, Financial and Operational Efficiencies, and Challenges and Opportunities of Big Data. Individual sessions will examine how each pillar can and will impact the data center and IT industries in 2013 and beyond.

Within the Value of Collaborative Regulatory Activity pillar, a dynamic panel session titled "Standards Today, Regulations Tomorrow" will take an in-depth look at standards and how the data center industry would change if regulators and governments across the world had ISO standards to reference. The Financial and Operational Efficiencies pillar will feature sessions led by experts from Digital Realty Trust, eBay, Fjord IT, Google, Interxion, Microsoft, Thomson Reuters, among others. Several other noteworthy sessions, events and case studies being presented at Forum 2013 include:

  • Fine-tuning Operations to Enable Business Growth and Drive Efficiency: Rohini Jain, Marketplaces Technology Finance Lead at eBay, will discuss ideas around enabling growth and efficiency at one of the world's largest online retailers.
  • Case Study: EMC's Durham Data Center: EMC will present a case study on its 20,000 square foot energy-efficient and 100-percent virtual data center in North Carolina.
  • Current and Short-Term Projected State of ENERGY STAR: Robert "RJ" Meyers, the Data Center Products lead at the EPA's ENERGY STAR Program, will present an update on the current status and accomplishments of the ENERGY STAR program, as well as look at its plans for the next several years, with a focus on the IT and data center areas.
  • Google's Data Centers: A behind the Scenes Look at Infrastructure and Innovations. Joe Kava, Data Center Operations Executive at Google, will offer an exclusive look at the data center operations at one of the largest and fastest growing internet companies in the world.
  • Digestion to Data: Powering the Cloud with Waste Materials: Sean James, Senior Research Program Manager at Microsoft, will discuss the research and development of the first zero carbon data center – called the Data Plant – that will be completely independent of the grid and will recycle common waste bi-products to sustainably power cloud services.

Internet of Things is moving from being a hype to a reality. Experts estimate that internet connected cars will grow to 152 million, while over 100 million internet connected wireless light bulbs and lamps will be operational by 2020. These and many other intriguing statistics highlight the importance of Internet powered devices and how market penetration is going to multiply many times over in the next few years.
To many people, IoT is a buzzword whose value is not understood. Many people think IoT is all about wearables and home automation. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Mike Kavis, Vice President & Principal Cloud Architect at Cloud Technology Partners, discussed some incredible game-changing use cases and how they are transforming industries like agriculture, manufacturing, health care, and smart cities. He will discuss cool technologies like smart dust, robotics, smart labels, and much more. Prepare...

Malicious agents are moving faster than the speed of business. Even more worrisome, most companies are relying on legacy approaches to security that are no longer capable of meeting current threats. In the modern cloud, threat diversity is rapidly expanding, necessitating more sophisticated security protocols than those used in the past or in desktop environments. Yet companies are falling for cloud security myths that were truths at one time but have evolved out of existence.
In the midst of the widespread popularity and adoption of cloud computing, it seems like everything is being offered “as a Service” these days: Infrastructure? Check. Platform? You bet. Software? Absolutely. Toaster? It’s only a matter of time. With service providers positioning vastly differing offerings under a generic “cloud” umbrella, it’s all too easy to get confused about what’s actually being offered. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Kevin Hazard, Director of Digital Content for SoftL...
It is one thing to build single industrial IoT applications, but what will it take to build the Smart Cities and truly society-changing applications of the future? The technology won’t be the problem, it will be the number of parties that need to work together and be aligned in their motivation to succeed. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jason Mondanaro, Director, Product Management at Metanga, discussed how you can plan to cooperate, partner, and form lasting all-star teams to change the world...

Public Cloud IaaS started its life in the developer and startup communities and has grown rapidly to a $20B+ industry, but it still pales in comparison to how much is spent worldwide on IT: $3.6 trillion. In fact, there are 8.6 million data centers worldwide, the reality is many small and medium sized business have server closets and colocation footprints filled with servers and storage gear. While on-premise environment virtualization may have peaked at 75%, the Public Cloud has lagged in adop...

Even as cloud and managed services grow increasingly central to business strategy and performance, challenges remain. The biggest sticking point for companies seeking to capitalize on the cloud is data security. Keeping data safe is an issue in any computing environment, and it has been a focus since the earliest days of the cloud revolution. Understandably so: a lot can go wrong when you allow valuable information to live outside the firewall. Recent revelations about government snooping, along...
The Internet of Things is not only adding billions of sensors and billions of terabytes to the Internet. It is also forcing a fundamental change in the way we envision Information Technology. For the first time, more data is being created by devices at the edge of the Internet rather than from centralized systems. What does this mean for today's IT professional? In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists will addresses this very serious issue o...
The web app is Agile. The REST API is Agile. The testing and planning are Agile. But alas, Data infrastructures certainly are not. Once an application matures, changing the shape or indexing scheme of data often forces at best a top down planning exercise and at worst includes schema changes which force downtime. The time has come for a new approach that fundamentally advances the agility of distributed data infrastructures. Come learn about a new solution to the problems faced by software orga...
