World Wide Technology Awarded U.S. Army Desktop Virtualization Project with Atlantis ILIO

World Wide Technology, Inc. (WWT), a market-leading systems integrator that provides innovative technology and supply chain solutions today announced it is working with Atlantis Computing™ to optimize storage and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) for the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) under the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA) and Clinical Application Virtualization (ACAV) contract. WWT was awarded the contract for its VDI expertise, ability to find and integrate best of breed technologies and proven track-record for successfully guiding clients through complex virtualization and cloud computing projects. The company is integrating Atlantis ILIO™ storage optimization software into a unique VDI architecture that is being deployed in eight military hospitals across the United States and Europe.

“Atlantis ILIO was instrumental in winning the U.S. Army project because it enabled us to reduce the amount of storage required by 80 percent,” said Scott Miller, WWT’s director of cloud, virtualization and Advanced Technology Center. “Based on the success at the U.S. Army, we have incorporated Atlantis ILIO into our standard VDI architecture to ensure we can deliver VDI below the cost of physical PCs while improving performance.”

Atlantis ILIO storage optimization software was selected by WWT based on its ability to enable the NetApp storage array to support five times more Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp users, ensure fast response times for medical applications during patient visits, and reduce the risk of storage performance bottlenecks affecting the entire virtual environment. Without Atlantis ILIO software, the virtual desktops and hypervisors compete for the same storage resources, which degrades desktop and application performance.

After extensive validation testing, Atlantis ILIO software was awarded the Certificate of Networthiness (U.S. Army CoN Cert ID: CERT-201211152) from the U.S. Army Medical Command (USAMITIC). This accreditation ensures Atlantis Computing products meet strict U.S. Army and Department of Defense (DoD) standards for security, compatibility and sustainability. This enables government departments to provide VDI storage and performance optimization software solutions that integrate with desktop virtualization projects. The CoN is required for all enterprise software products in the Army Enterprise Infrastructure Network. The certification also applies to all National Guard, Army Reserve and DoD organizations that use the Army Enterprise Infrastructure Network.

“WWT and Atlantis Computing have joined forces to design an architecture that will make Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp cost-effective without the deployment risk of traditional SAN/NAS storage performance bottlenecks,” said Steve Flora, director of federal sales for Atlantis Computing. “Based on our success with the U.S. Army and our Certificate of Networthiness, we will work closely with WWT to help other branches of the Department of Defense and other government agencies realize the benefits of desktop virtualization, while saving tax payer dollars.”

About The U.S. Army Medical Command

The MEDCOM currently manages more than a $13 billion budget and cares for more than 3.95 million beneficiaries—active-duty members of all services, retirees, and their family members. In addition to veteran support provided to all Services, Army medical personnel are engaged in many joint-service efforts. The OTSG oversees joint field operating activities for the Secretary of Defense and medical units participate in many multiservice deployments/exercises.

About Atlantis Computing

Atlantis Computing is transforming enterprise desktop computing by solving the challenges of virtual desktop deployments: storage costs, performance and deployment risks. The Atlantis ILIO software complements VDI solutions to cut VDI costs and deliver a desktop that is faster and cheaper than a PC. With Atlantis ILIO, IT organizations can deploy 4-7 times more desktops on the same storage footprint, making VDI more affordable by both cutting the amount of storage needed per desktop and enabling the use of less expensive storage options. Atlantis Computing is privately held and funded by El Dorado Ventures, Partech International and Cisco Systems with headquarters in Mountain View, California, and offices in London, England. The Software Defined Data Center (SDDC), which enables organizations to seamlessly run in a hybrid cloud model (public + private cloud), is here to stay. IDC estimates that the software-defined networking market will be valued at $3.7 billion by 2016. Security is a key component and benefit of the SDDC, and offers an opportunity to build security 'from the ground up' and weave it into the environment from day one. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Reuven Harrison, CTO and Co-Founder of Tufin,...
Cloud data governance was previously an avoided function when cloud deployments were relatively small. With the rapid adoption in public cloud – both rogue and sanctioned, it’s not uncommon to find regulated data dumped into public cloud and unprotected. This is why enterprises and cloud providers alike need to embrace a cloud data governance function and map policies, processes and technology controls accordingly. In her session at 15th Cloud Expo, Evelyn de Souza, Data Privacy and Compliance...

There are many considerations when moving applications from on-premise to cloud. It is critical to understand the benefits and also challenges of this migration. A successful migration will result in lower Total Cost of Ownership, yet offer the same or higher level of robustness. In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Michael Meiner, an Engineering Director at Oracle, Corporation, will analyze a range of cloud offerings (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and discuss the benefits/challenges of migrating to each of...
The industrial software market has treated data with the mentality of “collect everything now, worry about how to use it later.” We now find ourselves buried in data, with the pervasive connectivity of the (Industrial) Internet of Things only piling on more numbers. There’s too much data and not enough information. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Bob Gates, Global Marketing Director, GE’s Intelligent Platforms business, to discuss how realizing the power of IoT, software developers are now focu...
Every innovation or invention was originally a daydream. You like to imagine a “what-if” scenario. And with all the attention being paid to the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) you don’t have to stretch the imagination too much to see how this may impact commercial and homeowners insurance. We’re beyond the point of accepting this as a leap of faith. The groundwork is laid. Now it’s just a matter of time. We can thank the inventors of smart thermostats for developing a practical business a...
We certainly live in interesting technological times. And no more interesting than the current competing IoT standards for connectivity. Various standards bodies, approaches, and ecosystems are vying for mindshare and positioning for a competitive edge. It is clear that when the dust settles, we will have new protocols, evolved protocols, that will change the way we interact with devices and infrastructure. We will also have evolved web protocols, like HTTP/2, that will be changing the very core...

Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of bein...
Even as cloud and managed services grow increasingly central to business strategy and performance, challenges remain. The biggest sticking point for companies seeking to capitalize on the cloud is data security. Keeping data safe is an issue in any computing environment, and it has been a focus since the earliest days of the cloud revolution. Understandably so: a lot can go wrong when you allow valuable information to live outside the firewall. Recent revelations about government snooping, along...
