NTT Communications Talks Network Automation and Big Data at PTC’13

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT, today announced executives from the company’s U.S. subsidiary will speak at PTC’13, the Pacific Telecommunications Council’s annual conference and a premier Asia-Pacific telecommunications event, taking place 20-23 January in Honolulu, Hawaii. In alignment with the PTC’13 theme of Capacity, Capability, Collaboration, NTT Communications, a leading provider of transpacific network services, will offer its insight on game-changing opportunities and challenges presented by software defined networks (SDN) and big data for enterprises using transpacific networks and growing their businesses in Asia.

NTT Communications’ Transpacific Network Dominance

NTT Communications’ low latency, high capacity submarine cable systems include the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE), the shortest and most reliable route across Asian hub cites/data centers, and the PC-1 cable, the fastest route to Asia from the United States and back again. ASE enhances NTT Com’s highly reliable global network services by boosting the capacity and strengthening the redundancy of its Asian cable networks. NTT Com’s PC-1, the world’s most reliable, transpacific, sub-sea network, provides a vital link between the United States and Asia and is particularly attractive to multinationals that require Asia-Pacific service. Additionally, the NTT Com Global IP Network, one of the three largest IP backbones in the world, maintains the largest provisioned capacity for transporting data between the United States and Japan. The extensive global infrastructure NTT Com owns and operates covers over 159 countries across Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe.

“NTT Communications is the best and only solution for anyone who’s serious about transit between the United States and Japan,” said Dave Engberg, CTO of Evernote. “Our customers expect the highest quality of service possible, and NTT Communications’ direct routes to the markets that are the most critical to our business enable us to deliver just that.”

Executive Insight on Software Defined Networks

NTT America’s CTO Doug Junkins will participate on an Executive Insight Roundtable on Monday, 21 January at 11.45 HST. This panel of CTOs will highlight technological revolutions occurring today at all layers of the Internet, ranging from physical components such as optical cross connects, to network elements for wireless, wireline, and satellite systems. The panel will also cover architectures such as software defined networks and OpenFlow, and applications such as cloud-based software as a service. Traditional data centers are being replaced by software defined data centers connected by software defined networks, driven by everything from virtualization to flat data center networks, enabled in some cases by emerging technologies such as passive optical switches. These capabilities are being exposed by network application programming interfaces (APIs), providing unprecedented visibility and control to application developers. Mr. Junkins will elaborate on SDN from a network automation/API perspective and focus on how developing standard APIs will allow customers/operators to automate the provisioning and ongoing support of network connections.

Adhering to the company’s Global Cloud Vision, NTT Com will offer a globally seamless cloud service to enterprise clients worldwide. NTT Com is the first provider to apply SDN technology through the OpenFlow API to its infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering, the new Enterprise Cloud. Networks based on OpenFlow can dramatically improve productivity and reduce costs. SDN supports businesses that have significant cloud capacity requirements, allowing for optimized traffic flows and cloud workloads between and among data center facilities and separate clouds. The technology sustains a more nimble and scalable provisioning model for bandwidth on demand.

Big Data, Big Bandwidth, Big Opportunity

Mr. Brent Duncan, vice president of sales and marketing for the Global IP Network (GIN) of NTT Communications, will join industry experts for the Topical Session 5, “Big Data, Big Bandwidth, Big Opportunity,” on Tuesday, 22 January at 14.00 HST. In the telecommunications space, providers of undersea and terrestrial networks have responded to petabytes of data with additional capacity (and higher line rates) through planned or accelerated upgrades, or through new systems. As a result, it is possible to move large data sets quickly across the globe and store them in new green data centers that house storage and processing systems with high-speed network interfaces.

Big data is also creating opportunities for providers to increase revenue by offering solutions involving these large data sets, from providing customers with better access to information with content delivery networks (CDN) to minimizing security concerns with protection against DDoS and other cyber-attacks. NTT Communications’ own CDN solution, Smart Content Delivery, takes advantage of advanced technology to transmit big data quickly to data centers closer to end users. The company also offers an industry-leading DDoS Protection Service that helps mitigate large-scale attacks and keeps “clean” big data moving on to a network. Mr. Duncan, a security subject matter expert, will address these subjects as well as transpacific capacity during his presentation.

You're getting pitched every day from your legacy enterprise software and hardware vendors about "cloud." They're doing an amazing job of convincing your CIO and CTO about what cloud is and how you should use it. The reality is they're defending their shrinking market share and keeping you on the legacy treadmill for as long as they can by selling you solutions that aren't "cloud." In her session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Niki Acosta, Cloud Evangelista for Rackspace, will talk thro...
