Energy Efficiency in Data Centres to Lower Costs and Benefit the Environment

-- A Frost & Sullivan's online seminar will focus on total cost of ownership and environmental issues

LONDON, Jan. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The data centre market is growing at an extremely high rate and its boom can be owed to the ever increasing need for data transfer and storage. For this reason, it has become crucial to take in account the energy usage both from financial and environmental points of view.

The importance of energy efficiency in data centres will be discussed in Frost & Sullivan's web conference, taking place on Thursday, 24 January, 2013 at 2 pm GMT. Energy & Power Systems industry analyst Gautham Gnanajothi will lead a teleconference describing the market size and value and its various components. Additionally, the web seminar will look at the impact of energy efficiency in data centres with respect to the total cost of ownership (TCO) and environmental issues.

"Data centre managers are under constant pressure to lower the TCO and energy is one of the main components of the overall data centre operation cost. In an existing data centre the most effective method to reduce the TOC is to employ energy efficient solutions in the key areas of power and cooling," observes Gnanajothi.

Data centres are classified as mission critical facilities and any down time will result in a significant financial loss. In order to ensure highest availability, data centre managers employ high powered UPS systems. These UPS systems consume about 7% of the total energy. It is critical to make sure the UPS systems are highly energy efficient. There are a lot of energy efficient UPS systems in the market, modular UPS systems are one of the upcoming products which highly support energy efficiency and also address the data centre floor space issue. Cooling and HVAC account for half of the energy consumption in data centres. Innovative cooling solutions like fresh air free cooling will tend to lower the energy costs. As the IT equipment and servers getting bigger and complicated, the need for cooling has also been escalating. In this situation, the only solution to lower energy costs is to employ energy efficient cooling solutions.

"Green" issues have been the other aspect of energy efficiency. Many companies publicize themselves as a green company in order to increase their profile status in the market and to comply with the ever-tightening regulations.

The conference will offer a detailed analysis of energy consumption in data centres. It will identify the key issues that drive energy efficiency in data centres and the best practices for system optimization and implementation.
