Bechtel-Led Team Awarded Contract for Y-12/Pantex

Team Will Manage and Operate Facilities Within Nuclear Security Enterprise

RESTON, Va., Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A Bechtel-led team was selected today by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to manage and operate the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS), a team that includes Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Lockheed Martin, ATK, and SOC, will manage and operate the facilities within NNSA's Nuclear Security Enterprise. The five-year contract with NNSA includes options that may extend the contract term up to an additional five years, based on performance.

"The CNS team brings the right blend of leadership, new perspective, proven approaches, and NNSA knowledge," said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel's government services business. "This builds on our successful partnership with NNSA and we are pleased to lead the team selected to manage this work."

Both Y-12 and Pantex are charged with maintaining the safety, security, reliability, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.  Y-12 has an emphasis on the processing and storage of uranium and development of technologies associated with those activities. It also reduces the global threat posed by nuclear proliferation and terrorism. Pantex's mission includes providing assembly and dis-assembly operations.

"We are honored to have the opportunity to carry out this work in support of NNSA," said Jim Haynes, CNS president and CEO. "We are committed to delivering our work to the highest standards of safety, security, and efficiency. We are also pleased to be working with our partners Lockheed Martin, ATK, and SOC who are leaders in their industries."

Bechtel has a proven track record at both Y-12 and Pantex. The company also provides management and operations for NNSA at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, two of the U.S. government's premier research and development institutions. Over its history, Bechtel has successfully led integration efforts as the contractor for large, complex projects focused on national security, environmental stewardship, and nuclear power.

“Trust is an ongoing journey and sits at the foundation of any vendor relationship – the companies that don’t consistently earn trust won’t be around long,” noted Henrik Rosendahl, Senior VP of Cloud Solutions at Quantum, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “As they do more with cloud, trust will organically grow – maybe it’s just about meeting SLAs or seeing firsthand that data is there when you need it,” Rosendahl continued. If zettabytes of data exist, why is less than 1% of the world’s data being analyzed today? Seasoned entrepreneur and startup CEO Radhika Subramanian believes that the inability to analyze and gain value from Big Data is that organizations are taking a services-centered approach. As the title of the session implies, Subramanian believes that the data needs to do the talking, not armies of analysts searching and querying databases. Her company has developed high-speed, advanced algorithms to autom...
Analyzing Hadoop jobs and speeding them up is often a tedious and time consuming effort that requires experts. In his upcoming session at 12th Cloud Expo | Cloud Expo New York [10-13 June, 2013], Michael Kopp will be showing how proven APM techniques can be used to speed up Hadoop jobs at the core, without going through tons of log files, beyond just adding more hardware and within minutes instead of hours or days.

A recent study by analyst firm IDC reports that in 2012, 1.7 million cloud computing-related roles across the globe could not be filled due to the lack of training, certification and experience in the applicant pool.
