How JSON and Big Data Will Shape the Internet of Things

The catchphrase "Internet of Things" may seem like a relatively new term, but in reality has been around since the late ‘90s, when there was a desire to more efficiently track the flow of goods for supply chain purposes. The enabling technology was RFID which made it possible to report on stock levels and inventory in real-time. These days, the term "Internet of Things" has a much broader meaning than just supply chain technology. In the many years that have passed, big data and mobile technology have grown by leaps and bounds. This means that it is possible to crunch large amounts of sensor data and deliver context-relevant information to users on their smartphones. As a consequence, just about any physical object out there can be measured as long as there are sensors that can transmit this information. This has huge implications for global economic growth, and co... (more)

Three Ages of #DigitalTransformation | @CloudExpo #IoT #DevOps #BigData

Surviving the Three Ages of Digital Transformation When digital laggards finally recognize the degree of market disruption being caused by the rapid adoption of digital technologies, and desperately try to outrun the inescapable Darwinian effect of their slow response, they will be faced with not one, but three ages of digital transformation to navigate and survive. Understanding these ages, and what is unique about each one, is critical for business strategy, prioritizing, planning, sequencing and budgeting. Today, we live and work in the Age of Disruptive Transformation.  Traditional methods of conducting business, marketing products, delivering services, and engaging customers are being dramatically disrupted by digital technologies.  These disruptions are caused by the rapid consumer adoption of a new set of new digital and mobile technologies.  Enterprises that... Banishing Bandwidth Bottlenecks: Optimization is Cornerstone for Fast, Reliable High-Quality Video Delivery

In today’s modern poly-device lifestyle, consumers shift seamlessly across phones, computers, televisions and tablets, devouring rich media content wherever they are. This hyper-connected culture has spawned a new breed of consumer who expects high-quality entertainment on-demand – and at lightning-fast speed. Despite consumers’ voracious appetites for such content, the ability to capture video with state-of-the-art equipment in increasingly higher-resolution formats has far surpassed the technical infrastructure in distribution. For example, the increased resolution made possible by HD (high-definition) video and the developing UltraHD (4K) resolution standard means higher bitrates, creating a massive burden on both fixed and mobile networks. A technically efficient and low-cost solution for disseminating the massive amount of data required for high-quality v... (more)

Sorry, Android, But We’re Breaking Up: It’s Not Me, It’s You

I’ve never had an iPhone, but I will soon. Let me take you back. Ever since I heard the first rumors about the Galaxy S IV, it was the only phone I wanted. The two smartphones I’ve used – the Motorola Droid and Droid 3 – both ran on Android, and while I’ve had tons of issues with the hardware (random restarts, GPS failings, weird camera glitches and more), Android always treated me pretty well. But that’s not really true; “pretty well” is sort of overstating it. Android’s a notoriously fickle OS, and the Android update process is slow, bloated and overly complicated. Even though my Droid 3 came with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and it was super smooth at the time, within 9 months I was told that was my last OS upgrade. “Pretty well” is also sort of overstating my relative happiness with the apps available. I live on social media, and that’s tough to do when you’re on... (more)

Why small businesses need firewalls

I have been spending time this week at a small media company called Mercury Labs. Despite their name, they don’t normally test anything, but ironically that is what I have been doing there. I was testing a bunch of integrated network security devices for Network World.  These devices cover what is called unified threat management, but you can think of them as network firewalls with additional features, such as the ability to scan incoming and outgoing traffic for viruses and spam, blocking phishing URLs, and being able to set up a secure virtual private network connection when you are on the road.  I’ll call them advanced firewalls here for convenience. I have a long history of testing these tools. Almost seven years ago, one of the Techtarget publications had me looking at them for larger enterprises, and I went out to the central IT department at Stanford Universit... (more)

Plexxi on Integrations: If it’s a one-off, you’re doing it wrong

The energy behind things like SDN and DevOps is focused on driving long-term operating expense down through heavy automation. Automation within a silo is meaningful, particularly for infrastructure where the rate of change is either high or complex. In the former, it reduces repetitive tasks. In the latter, it lessens the likelihood of human error. But the real power of automation is at the edges. Wherever two silos come together (storage and networking, or compute and networking, for example), the boundaries tend to be hard edges. We don't see a lot of orchestration tools that effectively manage over these boundaries. In fact, within customer environments, these domains are owned by different teams under different management with different budgets and priorities. When things need to happen at these hard organizational and infrastructure edges, that work tends to be ...
